What to Wear for Spring Portraits
Spring sessions are some of my favorites—soft colors, fresh blooms, and that light, airy feel that photographs so beautifully.
But I know one of the biggest questions (and stressors!) is always:
“What should we wear?”
Let’s keep this simple and take the pressure off 🤍
Be inspired by these past session images!

Choose One Outfit

With your mini session being 20 minutes, I recommend one outfit per person.
You can always:
- Add a jacket or layer if it’s chilly
- Use accessories to change the look slightly
And truly—there is no “perfect” outfit. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and like yourself.

Looking your best during the session

Start with Mom First 😊
My go-to tip:
Mom picks her outfit first—and everything else is built around that.
Choose something you feel confident and comfortable in. Once you have your outfit:
- Pull colors from it
- Build the family’s look around those tones
- Let everyone coordinate instead of match
This makes everything feel cohesive and takes the guesswork out.
Keep It Simple
Seriously—don’t overthink this.
Whatever you would naturally choose for your own family… start there.
If you’re wearing a long dress with a denim jacket, you can carry that feel across the group:
- Maybe another mom wears a long dress
- Or chooses something soft and flowy
The goal is a look that feels consistent, not identical.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Create timeless images by coordinating colors instead of matching.
Gone are the days of white shirts and khakis 😉
Instead:
- Choose a soft color palette
- Let everyone wear tones that flatter them
- Mix textures and subtle patterns
This allows each person to feel their best while still looking beautiful together.

Color
Wear colors that reflect your personal style, or choose neutrals for a clean, modern look.
A little insider tip:
- Many spring blooms in York, Lancaster, and Hershey Gardens lean pink and pastel
- Soft colors photograph beautifully in these settings
I always recommend incorporating color rather than wearing white or tan head-to-toe (except brides… they get a pass 👑).
For Larger Families
The same approach works—just keep it simple and organized.
- Pick a cohesive color palette
- Share a few ideas with everyone ahead of time
- Keep flexibility within those tones
✨ Easy formula:
- Guys: 1–2 pant options + a neutral shirt
- Moms: coordinating shades (not exact matches)
- Kids: pull from the same tones and keep it comfortable
Shoes Matter
We’ll often be in grassy areas, so heels aren’t always the best choice.
I recommend:
- Flats
- Sandals
- Wedges or chunky heels
Most importantly—choose something you can walk and move in comfortably.
Layer + Accessorize
Layers and accessories are the easiest way to elevate your look.
Some favorites:
- Scarves, wraps, or shawls (especially for cooler days)
- Vests for guys (adds instant variety!)
- Statement shoes for a fun pop
- Jewelry to switch up your look
Layering not only adds interest—it also helps you stay comfortable.

Comfort is Key
You’ll be sitting, walking, holding your kids, and moving around.
If something feels uncomfortable or fussy, it will show.
Comfort = relaxed, natural, joyful images 🤍
Plan Ahead
Try everything on about a week before your session.
This gives you time to:
- Make changes if needed
- Order missing pieces
- Prep everything so you’re not rushed
Bring a Simple Touch-Up Kit
A few small things can make a big difference:
- Lint roller (a must for pet owners!)
- Hair + makeup touch-ups
- Bobby pins (wind happens!)
- Chapstick or lipstick
- Snacks or small treats for kids
A little preparation helps everything run smoothly.
Final Thoughts 💛
No matter what you wear, this session is about love and celebrating this season of your life.
The most important thing is that your family feels comfortable, connected, and like yourselves.
And if you’re unsure—please reach out! I love helping you plan outfits and bring everything together.
See you soon!
